New to Mapping Toolbox

I'd like to use the mapping toolbox just to get a good looking base globe to overlay other results on. I'd like political boundaries and major rivers and bodies of water at a minimum. Can anyone point me to some products available via WMS that can do this? I'm a little lost just randomly searching. Half the things I try fail to download or fail to plot, but then all I know how to do is use "geoshow". Any pointers would be great.

I'm assuming things from WMS can work in a vector fashion and not just wrap images around the globe. Is that true?
