how can i convert an image of a hand to an input for a neural network for training?

i am doing a project to recognize hand gesture using image processing and i have to do this with the help of neural network. since i am new with the concept of neural network how can i make my input image of a hand to an input to the NN. what are the steps i need to do for this?
