2012 IEEE 51st Annual Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)

The 51st IEEE Conference on Decision and Control will be held Monday through Thursday, December 10-13, 2012 at the Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii. The conference will be followed by technical workshops on Friday, December 14, 2012.

The CDC is recognized as the premier scientific and engineering conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control. The CDC annually brings together an international community of researchers and practitioners in the field of automatic control to discuss new research results, perspectives on future developments, and innovative applications relevant to decision making, automatic control, and related areas.

The 51st CDC will feature contributed and invited papers, as well as tutorial sessions and workshops.

The IEEE CDC is hosted by the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Japanese Society for Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), and the European Union Control Association (EUCA).

Sponsored Session: Using the Arduino with MATLAB and Simulink to Teach Controls

Description: Low-cost microcontroller platforms such as Arduino are popular teaching tools because they enable students to work with physical control problems. Students have an opportunity to experience design and implementation of practical control algorithms and then gain hands-on experience with a variety of control applications.

In this session, you will learn how the Arduino can be used together with Simulink to supplement control system courses and lab exercises with hands-on applications. We will explore simple system identification,  practical controller tuning, and controller implementation.

In particular, we will talk about the design and implementation of a PID controller when a plant model is not available. Through a DC motor control example, we will demonstrate how to:

  1. Apply input signals (voltage) to the motor and collect output (angular position) test data
  2. Identify and validate linear and nonlinear plant models using multiple data sets
  3. Design a linear controller based on the linear motor model and simulate its performance against the nonlinear model
  4. Implement and test the controller on a target hardware platform

We will specifically highlight the new Simulink support for Arduino Hardware that lets you run Simulink models directly on Arduino prototyping boards in real-time.

About the Presenter: Erman Korkut is a Software Developer in the Control and Identification Group at MathWorks. He has extensive experience with developing tools for linear system analysis and control design in MATLAB and Simulink. Erman holds an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering with a major in Control Systems from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
